“Piggy’s glasses were misted again–this time with humiliation (486).”
This part always hurt. Ralph was entrusted with this intimate weakness and he expelled it to the rest of the boys. Although humorous to some, it was ultimately what crippled Ralph and his team. It was sadism from Ralph, rather than Jack.
“Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea. His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy’s arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig’s after it has been killed. Then the sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone (492).”
I’ve never read this novel, but have watched the movie. And watching Piggy’s death definitely hit a nerve, but I think reading it was more gruesome, and strangely, more soothing. It displayed a gentle contrast with the sea washing his body away with the brutality of Piggy’s death. The sea, in a way, gave him a compassionate burial. In the movie, he did not even get that. This is Piggy’s Death Scene from 1990s movie if any one is interested in watching sadness.
“I’ve had quite a few cases where I ask a kid, “why did you blow up that frog” or “set fire to the cat?” and they don’t respond with answers like I hate cats or I didn’t see that as a living thing. Their answer is we were bored. And then you have to ask yourself, well, what about alternate pathways to alleviating this boredom? I have difficulty grasping the payoff for setting fire to a dog (504).”
This part really got to me as well, since my Mexican grandmother and her grandmother and so on and so forth, always passed down the saying “cuando el diablo se aburre, mata moscas con el rabo.” This basically is “idle time is the devil’s workshop” saying. This also reminded me of a man who was famous for his YouTube Channel “bootsmade4crushing” where he crushed toys, food, and other innocuous objects, but then had another channel called “Boots666” where he would crush small animals for sexual arousal. I think this was also mentioned on page 506 of our anthology, but this is the most current example, since Youtube decided in 2015 to take down the channel, after years of running. I’m overall very disturbed since a lot of these cruel people are just “bored” and decide to murder for arousal and boredom.
